Not all E-numbers are bad
E-numbers are substances added to food products to, for example, extend shelf life, add color, or improve taste. Some E-numbers are safe, while others can be harmful to your health.
A list of E-numbers that refer to safe and natural substances:
- E300 - ascorbic acid: this is vitamin C, a powerful antioxidant used in many foods to maintain color and flavor.
- E306 - tocopherol: this is vitamin E, another antioxidant that helps protect foods from oxidation.
- E440 - pectin: this is a natural fiber extracted from fruit and often used as a thickener in jams and jellies.
- E410 - locust bean gum: this is a thickener extracted from the seeds of the carob tree and often used in dairy products and sauces.
- E161b - lutein: this is a pigment naturally found in vegetables such as spinach and kale and used as a coloring agent in foods.
